CalpH is designed to neutralise acid water and remineralise very pure water. When rain falls, the water has a naturally aggressive, slightly acidic nature. This water then dissolves chalk and/or metallic deposits present in the local rock strata. This then leads to the contamination of the water. As a reult, of this mean that ground and borehole water contain a number of elements that would not otherwise be present in mains water.

Acidic water results in corrosion of pipework, heating cylinders and other equipment. Any iron and manganese present will result in poor tasting water, staining of baths, basins and any other appliances that come into contact with untreated water.

It is often difficult to remove iron and manganese from the water supply, so the first process is to correct the pH. A pH value of below 7 is considered to be acidic, levels below 6.0 are considered to be extremely aggressive. For information on our iron removal systems please click here.

CalpH works by passing contaminated water through a bed of specially activated limestone contained within a pressure vessel. This is a mixture of calcium and magnesium salts. As the water is passed through the vessel the pH of the water is corrected. Over time, the medium contained in the vessel will deplete and need refilling. However, this is a simple process as the medium is inert and can be easily handled.

To treat waters that are otherwise clean and pure, a basic up-flow system is all that is required. For water with iron or turbidity problems, an automatic backwashing downflow system will be needed to remove accumulated debris.
