CalNitrate

The prescence of nitrates in ground water supplies is usually caused by fertilisers. The EEC permitted maximum concentration is 50mg/l with an advisory concentration of 25mg/l.

Nitrates dissolved in water cannot be removed by simple filtration. They can only be reduced or eliminated by using ion exchange at point of entry, reverse osmosis, or a disposable ion exchange cartridge at point of use.

For single dwellings with one drinking water tap and low water consumption, a point of use system provides efficient reduction at a low cost. For large or multiple properties, a central or point of entry regenerable ion exchange system will be better suited.

CalNitrate works by passing water through a special polymer resin designed to remove negative nitrate and sulphate ions. It replaces them with chloride ions. Over time, the resin bed will become exhausted and needs to go through a regeneration process. For fixed and low level water demand, a simple time clock controlled regeneration process will suffice. Where there is a varying demand a metered unit will be required.  In high demand applications a duplex system will be required. There are a wide range of valves available with CalNitrate and we can advise you on the most appropriate for your circumstances.

CalNitrate will require a constant supply of salt to operate correctly. We recommend the use of tablet or block salt. For more information on salt please click here.

To prevent damage to the resin vessel all softeners must be protected from the negative pressure from the drain, or supply. An air break check valve is recommended on the inlet supply. The SE valves are high specification counter current regeneration valves, equipped with an electronic, programmable integral controller. These units are able to reduce the nitrate level by 90% to 93%. The normal valves are standard specification co-current regeneration valves, with timer or meter controls. These units are able to reduce the nitrate level by 80% to 85%.

Larger nitrate removal units are available - please call 01535 210320 for a quotation and specification details.
